Staff Member of the Month of November

(Staff Member of the Month is chosen and voted on by Panther Press students.)

This month’s Staff Member of the Month goes to Mr. Jordan May. Mr. May teaches secondary science.

Panther Press reporter Liz Guzman sat down with Mr. May to talk about his life and career.

What is your favorite color?

Mr. May: I think my favorite color is going to have to be what most guys like: blue.

Do you have any hobbies?

Mr. May: Yes! I love to go fishing, I love hunting, and I love to play golf.

Do you enjoy spending any time alone?

Mr. May: Not really. I like to have friends and family with me wherever I go.

What music genre do you like to listen to?

Mr. May: Yeah, I like country music.

Is there any movie genre you like, and if so what is your favorite movie from that genre?

Mr. May: I kinda like comedy movies. One of my favorite movies is A Knight's Tale.

How many years have you been teaching?

Mr. May: I am in my third year of teaching.

What is the best part about your job?

Mr. May: Just getting to work with the students and meeting new kids every year and getting to know them.

How do you handle classroom management?

Mr. May: I try to just be cool and not be so "over management" over the students. I just try to let things flow.

Why did you decide to choose this career?

Mr. May: It seem like it would fit. I never really thought I would be a teacher until I had kids and started working with them. I kinda just felt like “Hey, this can be my calling.”

If you were not a teacher what career path would you have chosen?

Mr. May: Some sort of environmentalist. I don't know exactly what.

What do you dislike about teaching?

Mr. May: There's not a whole lot about I don't like about teaching. I think there's a lot of extra things we're asked to do besides teaching and that kinda gets in the way of teaching.

Can you describe your day to day as a teacher?

Mr. May: Well its mostly just teaching students for six periods. Seventh period is when I kinda just take a deep breathe and relax for a minute before I get back to work to plan what we will be doing for the next day.

Do you have any words of wisdom for the class of 2023?

Mr. May: I would say just be whatever makes you happy. Don’t be what mom and dad want you to be or, you know, whoever wants you to be. Do what makes you happy to become successful.
