On Friday, September 20th, the 5th graders trekked across campus to the FACS building during Mrs. Arnold's 3rd and 6th period classes. During these classes, they learned how to make homemade ice cream! Not only did they have fun, and get to eat delicious ice cream, they did it all by themselves with very little help from Mrs. Arnold’s students. The 5th graders learned how to measure ingredients properly. This experience helped introduce them to fractions and show them the relevance of applying fractions and measurements in real life situations such as cooking. The students also learned the necessity of being patient. A couple of the 5th graders made the mistake of rushing the process which softened the consistency of the ice cream making it melt quickly. At Collinsville High School, we are well aware that much is to be learned through errors made and that quality learning is achieved through trial and error. Whether it be cooking or working on assignments for school, it is important to take your time. While making the ice cream was fun, it was very messy. Messes are sometimes the end result of chaos, but Mrs. Arnold’s classes were able to demonstrate that organized chaos can be successful as long as everyone contributes to the clean-up process. While this activity was fun, the 5th grade students learned valuable life lessons and hopefully left the FACS class with a desire to learn more about the magic made when creating in the kitchen. Thank you Mrs. Arnold for organizing this learning opportunity for the students of Collinsville High School!
